Luqa Airfield Pillbox 12 is one of the numerous pillboxes built around Luqa airfield to defence the location from airborne assault. After the fall of Crete the British anticipated a similar airborne assault on the key points and airfields of Malta.
This pillbox is built on one of the four towers that surrounds the covered Shinas Reservoir which is adjacent to the airfield. This tower covers the main road, and there is an open balcony, with concrete wall, built on top of it. This was primarily for observation and to engage paratroopers. The machine gun emplacements are in the tower below, the loopholes protected by iron bans.
