Potters Cay

Posted on May 26, 2022 / 30
Listing Type : Coastal Battery
Location : Caribbean Sea

Potters Cay is an island that lies between Hog Island (Paradise Island) and Nassau Island.  In the 1859 report by Lt. Col. Bourchier he recommended that a battery be built at Potter’s Cay with four 32-pdr guns and accommodation for 30 men.  It would appear that most of the recommendations contained in this report were not carried out, but it would appear from a site visit that the Potter’s Cay battery exists but this could have been the original battery on this site.

The battery is of a simple design and faces towards the East to engage ships trying to enter the anchorage from that side.  It would have worked in conjunction with Fort Montague.  This battery has been referred to as Bladen’s Battery, but signage at Fort Montague would indicate that it lay to the west of this location on Nassau Island.
