Listing Type : Coast Defence Battery
Location : England
Woolwich Battery is a small sea battery located on the South Bank of the River Thames, protecting the Royal Woolwich Dockyard at that location. Built in 1847 the Woolwich Battery appear to have mounted four smoothbore guns firing through embrasures. It would appear that the battery was later armed with two 24-pdr SB guns on traversing platforms, with two of the old embrasures left empty. Maps from 1894 show the battery with two guns, but it is shown as the four gun battery which originally had two more guns.
