Waldegrave Battery was built in 1798 on the site of what had been the Old North Castle. Waldegrave Battery lies adjacent to Chain Rock Battery, and the two are mutually supporting. Originally the battery had two smoothbore guns and a small guard house. The magazine was a mobile one, similar to those used in the Channel Islands. Waldegrave Battery was refurbished in 1810 and remained in use until at least 1868.
Plans from 1845 show the battery to be semi-circular, possibly with two guns at this time. (TNA MPH 1.896). Plans held in the National Archives from 1858 show the configuration of the battery much as it stands now. (TNA MPH 1.65)
During World War 1 a 12-pdr QF gun was mounted here, which was also used for training purposes. During the War additional support buildings were built around the coastal battery including a barracks, mess facilities and office accommodation. Most of these stone buildings have now been recycled as repair brick from the Anglican Church in the 1940.
