Mount Wise No.5 Battery was originally built in between 1780 and 1784 and was intended as a saluting battery. It held a mixture of guns in 1850 including a 6-pdr, three 32-pdr and two 8-inch SB guns. Between 1860 and 1865 it was upgraded and armed with five 64-pdr RML positions separated by earthen traverses. The Mount Wise No.5 Battery remained in use until 1896.
