McNab’s Island is the largest of the islands in Halifax Harbour. The Island is named after Peter McNab and his family who lived there until 1934. From the middle of the 19th Century is was an integral part of the fortifications defending Halifax Harbour and Anchorage. Much of the Island became a military reserve with the following key features:

The military also built a pier on the North end of the Island below Ives Point Battery. There was also an underground 6-pdr Quick Fire Battery and Submarine Mining Observation Station built just below Ives Point Battery.
