Naden Graving Dock is a significant dry dock because the completion of this graving dockyard funded by the Canadian was one of the conditions for British Columbia becoming the sixth province of the Dominion of Canada.  With agreement to the building of this graving dock, British Columbia joined the Dominion of Canada on the 20th July 1871.

The Naden Graving Dock was built between September 1971 and 10th June 1887.  The dock now lied adjacent to the Canadian Naval establishment.

The naval barracks in Esquimalt were originally called Naden.
