Mary Hill Battery was one of the coastal defence batteries built at some speed in 1938. It was built to mount three 6-inch BL Mark 7 guns on Mark 2 mountings. These mountings were upgraded to high angle fire in 1914.
Although this battery it is out of period has been included because it is on military land is not maintained. The possibility is therefore that it will slowly be lost.
The three gun emplacements are in a straight line across the peninsular, roughly 150 metres away from each other. The are surrounded by crew shelters, magazines and other buildings, mainly protected with prefabricated concrete tiles held in place with iron. This method of construction is very similar to that used on York Shore Battery in Halifax.
