Fort Kelburne was built between December 1885 and April 1887 to mount two 6-inch BL guns on Hydro pneumatic disappearing mounts. The battery was decommission in 1925 and destroyed for road development in 1963.
The two gun pits were some 120 feet apart overlooking the sea. The whole site was situated on four levels enclosed to the rear with a loopholed wall and to the front with a palisade unclimbable fence. The design of the defensible barracks was done my Tudor Boddam and similar designs were used at Fort Bastion in Auckland, Fort Takapuna also in Auckland and Central Battery, Ocean Beach in Dunedin. Fort Kelburne has been lost to road development and nothing remains above ground.
