Authority to build the Submarine Mining Establishment at South Gare was given on the 27th February 1886. The Submarine Mining Establishment was built between 9th February and 30th October 1886. The complex includes the usual collection of building all linked with a narrow gauge railway to a pier that lay just over 100 metres to the North. The whole was protect with a loopholed wall, with some blockhouses being added later.
