Listing Type : Coastal Battery

Wellesley Battery was built between the 4th July 1888 and 18th March 1898 to mount four 40-pdr RBL guns.  The guns were mounted on carriages in open barbette positions.  The plans show that the guns were on wooden platforms.

The battery was ‘U’ shaped with two guns facing South and then one gun on each flank.  There was a single magazine, in the centre of the battery, between the two South facing guns.  The magazine had two chambers with a shared light recess.

The battery would appear to have been served by locally enlisted artillery.  Green Quick Fire Battery lies adjacent.
