Thursday Island is part of the Torres Strait Islands, Australia. The harbour since 1864 had been Somerset on the end of the Cape York Peninsular but currents made this hazardous. In 1867 a new harbour was established at Port Kennedy on the south side of Thursday Island and this harbour that was subsequently designated as a Coaling Station.
The Harbour of Port Kennedy had one principal defence location, Green Hill Fort which was built in 1892.
