The Heavy Q.F. Battery was built at Shoeburyness between 1899 and 1900 as an extension of an existing position believed to date back to 1855. It is a raised battery mounting two 6-inch BL guns (North side) and two 4.7-inch BL guns (South side). It was intended to training gunners to fire from elevated positions on to targets. There was a separate battery command post built to the rear but now destroyed. The magazines were in the building below the gun emplacements with shell and cartridge lifts. Built as a training facility the battery was actually used as coast defence battery during times of war.
There was a wooden building adjacent to this battery that housed a a number of guns and dummy loaders for training the gunners in loading of artillery. Some of the original gun emplacements survive but the wooden building is long gone.
