9.2-inch Shoeburyness

The 9.2-inch Shoeburyness emplacement is one of the surviving featureless at Shoeburyness Garrison.  The emplacement faces over the Thames and was previously used for testing various guns including the 9-inch High Angle Fire guns and various disappearing guns on Moncrieff mounts.  The emplacement was first constructed in the 1880s but has been modified many times since. The current position is for a 9.2-inch Mark VII gun and dates from 1926 when it became a coast defence battery.  The 9.2-inch gun was moved to Dover in 1941.

During the 1970s the floor of the gun pit was raised to accommodate new long range ammunition storage.
