Signal Hill

Signal Hill is the heights spot and covers the Northern entrance to St John’s harbour and gives good general views all round.

On the 15th September 1762 the British Forces under the command of Colonel William Amherst defeated the French forces entrenched on Signal Hill, confirming Newfoundland as a British possession.

In 1809 plans were drawn up by the British to built a Citadel along the Signal Hill ridge line.  (TNA MR 1/926)
