The Simon’s Town Submarine Mining Establishment was approved by the Secretary of State for War in 1889, the cost to be shared by the War Department and Admiralty. The pier was built and the site was operational by 1890. In September 1890 the whole cost of the Submarine Mining Establishment was transferred to the Admiralty.
The Submarine Mining Building were lost to development between 1900 and 1912 when the new gravelling dock and naval dockyard was built at Simon’s Town.
Table Bay, Cape Town had no Submarine Mining Establishment.
