Carleton Martello Tower is located on a small hill overlooking the harbour of Saint John. Carleton Tower was built in 1812 and is one of the nine surviving Martello Towers in Canada. In 1846 a new bombproof magazine was built with the Tower and it was primarily used as a Magazine. Between 1859 and 1866 it mounted two 32-pdr SB guns and was intended to defend the city from any Fenian Raids. After that the Tower was primarily used as barracks.
In World War II a two storey Fire Command Post was built on the roof. The weight of this structure has recently caused problems to the integrity of the Tower, and is was removed between 2003/24. The intention is to replace the original concrete Command Post with a lightweight replica.
