The Castle was built in 1708, but the present building mainly result from 1867 when it was rebuilt. Originally part of the defences built by the East India Company it became the Governors Residence with adjacent administrative offices. The Island came under Crown control in 1815 on the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars and the incarceration of Napoleon on the Island.
