Mundens Lower Searchlights

St Helena
Posted on January 5, 2025 / 15
Listing Type : Observation
Location : Atlantic Islands

Munden’s Lower Searchlight position includes two Defence Electric Lights  on the shore line below the main battery.  The top emplacement was also the Directing Station for the searchlights.

There is an addition Defence Electric Light emplacement located above, close to the Battery Observation Post, see separate entry here.

It is assumed that these Defence Electric Lights worked in conjunction with Munden Battery above.  The two emplacements were built between 19th January 1903 and 14th October 1904 for a total cost of £854, more than double the estimated cost.   Access to the Defence Electric Lights is by an iron cat ladder from the Engine Engine above.  The short tunnel leading to this ladder has the date of 1907 over it.
