High Knoll Fort is located about 585 Metres above sea level on St Helena with sheer cliffs on one side. It was built between 1790 and 1799 and a circular tower or redoubt. Between 1874 and 1894 it was expanded and made into a citadel of last resort in case of any enemy landing. The intention was that the military and civilian population could fall back to this sizeable fortification (roughly 190 metres by 75 metres) if an enemy force was able to establish a presence in James Town and Ladder Hill. The position also protects the rear of the Ladder Hill Batteries and shields the approaches to Jamestown.
