Saigong, Ho Chi Min City came under French control from 1887. The Port of Saigon became the primary French naval base in Indo China and was defended by a number of fortifications. These defences were concentrated in the vicinity of Vung Tau, and a fort with two armoured turrets at the Overage de Rach-Cat, all covering the River Estuary.
