Roslin Glen Gunpower Mill was built in about 1790 and started producing gunpowder in about 1804. The factory occupies a one hundred acre site. Power was initially provided by water mills, but these were replaced by steam in about 1850. The factory produced about 20 tons of black gunpowder, with production more than doubling by 1940. It was the largest producer of Black Powder in Scotland for both military and civilian use.
The site runs along a section of the River North Esk with platform built into the cliff side to prevent any single explosion causing a chain reaction. Although it is not hard to see where the various buildings and magazine once stood, little remains apart from foundations.
When established the site manufactured black powder but by 1914 half the site was used for filling bombs and shells.
