Syriam Minefield Battery was built by 1898 adjacent to Syriam Heavy Battery.  The battery mounted two 6-pdr Hotchkiss Quick Fire guns supported by two Maxim Machine Guns.  In early reports it was referred to a Siriam Battery. and included with the heavy battery.  The fortifications included two Defence Electric Light positions, one of these for a see-saw light.  The two locations were connected by narrow gauge tramway track.  The guns and lights were positioned to protected the Syriam Minefield which covered the main channel of the Rangoon River.

The two 6-pdr gun were underground in casemated positions, probably cut and cover.  The emplacement appears to be similar to the 6-pdr West Battery at Lei Yu Muen in Hong Kong.

Syriam Minefield Battery also included the Test Room and two Observing Stations required for operating the minefield.
