Quebec Citadel was built by the British between 1820 and 1850 principally to protect the area from attacks from the USA. It is the largest British fortification in North America. The French initially built some fortifications here of which a Magazine and Redoubt survive. The British construction included barracks, magazines and new gun batteries. The fortification was taken over by the Canadians in 1871 and continues to this day as an active military base.
