Martello Tower No.2 Quebec, along with Tower No. 3 was built to hold some twenty troops and was larger than Martello Tower Number N0.1 and Martello Tower Number N0.4. These four Martello Towers provided protection on the land front of Quebec City.
Martello Tower was built between 1808 and 1813. The Tower has two storey with a flat roof for up to to four guns on the roof.
Plans indicate that a redoubt was originally located at the rough location of Martello Tower Number 2 on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec Citadel. Gother Mann, who commanded the Royal Engineers in Canada between 1785 and 1804 recommended the building of Martello Towers to protect the land approaches to Quebec Citadel. Work commenced in 1808 under Ralph Bruyeres, who replaced Gother Mann. The Governor James Craig, authorised construction without consent from the British Government in London. The four towers were completed by 1813 when war broke out with the United States. The four towers stand in an almost straight line.
