In 1863 the Charlottetown Volunteer Militia Artillery took over duties at the Battery from the Royal Artillery. The brick magazine on site was built between 1866 and 1868. The four 32-pdrs were replaced with three 64-pdr (converted 32-pdrs) RML guns in 1901. The parapet for the four barbette gun emplacements was improved in 1882.
Prince Edward Battery was regarded as of little use for defence purposes as early as 1883 and it was used mainly for training.
