Spring Vale Position Finding Station was built on a small plot of land adjacent to Royal Cottage which was a former Coast Guard station. This building still stands by the Position Finding Station has been demolished and a new house built on the spot.
Authority for the Spring Vale Position Finding Station was given on the 12th January 1892 and work started on the 10th May 1894. Construction was completed on the 31st December, at a cost of £263, £53 over the estimated cost.
The actual position finding station was a two storey building with one cell on each floor. The ground floor cell was accessed with a short flight of five stone steps up from the ground level, while the upper cell was reached by an iron run ladder. The sea facing aspect of the building made use of lead flashing, possibly to help camouflage the building. The observation slits were covered with wooden shutters that could be lower when in operation. The AI generate image shows roughly how the position finding station looked when built.
