Round Tower Position Finding Station is located at Cliff End just West of Cliff End Battery. The construction was approved on 11th March 1893 and worked commenced on the 22nd July 1893. The construction was completed on 5th December 1893 at a total cost of £259, over the estimate by £23.
Just to the West of the site was the Observation Post for the Brennan Torpedo Station built at Fort Albert. This is a single isolated observation cell on the cliff edge, about 100 feet (39 metres) West of the Position Finding Station.
Round Tower Position Finding Station consists of five cells, with Cells 2, 4 and 5 dedicated to Cliff Battery and Cell Number 3 serving Hurst Castle. Cell Number 1 is not designated on the plans. (UK TNA WO 78/4249). Cell Number 1 and Cell Number 3 are similar in construction with no plotting table, only a 4 foot concrete table below the observation slit. The other three cells are of familiar construction with a plotting table in a room about 5.6 feet by 11 feet. The roof is iron girders with corrugate iron, covered in earth and foliage. Each cell has a single Howarth’s roof ventilation unit.
The site has survived but the cells appear to have fallen down with subsidence. All we could find on site was the old underground reservoir and the fence posts for the Western extremity of the station.
