Puckpool Battery was not recommended in the Royal Commission of 1859 but approved by the Defence Committee in 1862 to mount some twenty one mortars with appropriate barrack accommodation. It was to be primarily a high angle fire battery with plunging fire to hit the unarmoured decks of enemy warships in the Spithead area. Work on the battery started in 1863 and appears to have been completed in about 1865, although there appears to have been considerable changed in its’ actual armament. The battery when completed mounted some thirty 13-inch mortars with five light guns covering the foreshore to the front from direct attack. In 1867 the armament was reviewed again by the Defence Committee and the armament fixed at thirty eight 13-mortars mounted in two lines. Between each pair of guns there was a traverse. In 1873 the light guns covering the foreshore and Spithead were replaced by four 11-inch RML guns and a single 7-inch RBL. There were now thirty 13-inch Mortars.
In 1887 the number of 13-inch Mortars was reduced to twenty two and they were all removed shortly after.
In 1887 two 10.4-inch BL guns were recommended to be mounted and by 1892 these were built in protected barbette emplacements. These particular mountings were unique.
In 1902 Puckpool Battery was upgraded with two 9.2-inch Mark X, BL guns, supported by two 6-inch Mark VII, BL guns. Four Nordenfelt Machine Guns were also mounted. In 1909 these two 6-inch BL guns were moved to Spitbank Fort in the Solent.
By 1906 the two 9.2-inch guns were posted as being in reserve and were withdrawn in 1927. Two Maxim machine guns had now replaced the four Nordenfelt MGs.
In 1928 the whole site was given to the local council who turned it into a leisure park. The site remains open as a public park in 1025,
