The Number 5 Redoubt on Marker Heights was one of a chain of defences built on the Rane Peninsular to help protect the Royal Naval Dockyard at Plymouth. The four original redoubts were built during the 18th Century. Work on the Number 5 Redoubt began in July 1782 and was mostly completed the following year. The Number 5 Redoubt was strengthened by 1791 with stone work added including a loopholed defensible barracks, and other stone revetments. The barracks doubled as a musketry gallery, the magazine being underground below. During the Napoleonic Wars the Redoubt had a total of nine guns, two on the North face and three on the South face and four on the West face. By 1886 Redoubt Number 5 had fallen out of repair.
