Crawsand Fort was the site of an earlier coastal defence battery built in about 1779. Cawsand Fort was built between 1861 and 1863 and armed with nine 64-pdr RML guns and four 8-inch SB guns. There were also some 7-inch RBL guns installed. The 64-pdr RML guns were dispersed around the perimeter.
