Penang was initially used by the Dutch as a trading post/  In 1805 it became a separate presidency of British India.  George Town in Penang was the capital of the Straits Settlements until 1832 when the capital was transferred to Singapore.  Penang remained an important trading port under British control and as part of Straits Settlements became a British Colony in 1867.
