Pater Battery was one of the four fortifications  protecting the approaches to Pembroke Dockyard in the middle of the 19th Century.

The Battery  was built between 1817 and 1840 to mount a total of twenty two 24-pdr guns in open embrasures.  By the 1880s the battery had been re-armed with ten 8-inch SB Howitzers and six 32-pdr guns. By 1893 the battery was used for drill purposes only with six 64-pdr RML guns and later an additional two 9-inch RML guns.

The battery has largely been destroyed by subsequent expansion of the dockyard.

A visit in 2021 revealed that the whole site is now due for future redevelopment to convert it to a site for building wind turbines.
