Torre de Santandria or Torre des Castellar was built by the British between 1799 and 1802. This is therefore one of the later Towers bult by the British. The Martello Tower was built to help defence against possible landings.
The tower is built inside a dry moat which has been created by building up a bank of loose rubble, with a stone faced counterscarp. This means that only the top of the Martello Tower is visible.
Because this is a sunken fort, it has an unusual entrance, a deviation from the entrance of the first floor by ladder. The tower is accessed through a tunnel that leads from the counter-scarp wall.
The dry moat is some six metres wide and is covered by musketry loopholes on the roof and base of the tower.
