St Thomas Tower was built by the Knights of St John to defence the area around Marsaskala Creek and St Thomas’s Bay. Construction started in 1614 and the fortification had four pentagonal bastioned turrets on each corner. It was surrounded by a rock cut dry moat.
In 1715 a coast defence battery was built in front of the tower and a star shaped perimeter wall built around the whole complex as an additional line of defence.
The British military used the tower, but unlike Saint Lucian Tower they made few structural changes and did not mount any modern guns.
