The original Royal Navy Hospital (Bighi) was built between 1830 and 1832. Major new blocks were built in 1901 and 1903.  The Hospital became a major resources for the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean, especially during the later Dardanelles Campaign.

A Royal Navy Hospital was one of the key features in all major defended port, the first Royal Navy hospital having been built in Port Mahon in Menorca.
