The Fortified Farmhouse Birkirkara overlooks the modern Mriehel Bypass, in Birkirkara. This historic farmhouse was already surrounded by walls and to an extent fortified. During the early stages of World War 2 loopholes were added to the lookout tower and upper floors so that fire could be directed onto the main road. While not a pillbox, these local defence points would provide considerable problems for advancing infantry and functioned in much the same way.
