St Michael’s Lower Battery was located immediately to the rear of the main St Michael’s Bastion. This location is facing Westwards and gives an uninterrupted view of the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour. The corner emplacement, probably for the 68-pdr has traversing slides that allow all round fire. In 1861 this battery is shown as being armed with the following guns:

Listing Type : Coast Defence Battery
Location : Malta
One 68-pdr SB gun
Two 8-inch (shell) guns
Three 24-pdr SB guns
Two 13-inch Mortars
At least three of the gun emplacements appear to have survives, one for the 68-pdr SB gun and the other two for 8-inch or 24-pdr SB guns.
As far as is known, St Michael’s Lower Battery was never upgraded during the RML or Breech Loading Phases of development.
