Listing Type : Coast Defence Battery
Location : Malta
Spencer’s Bastion is an extension of St Michael’s Bastion. While St Michael’s Bastion primarily covers the land front, Spencer’s covers the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour which lies around Manoel Island. Spencer’s Bastion lies above St Andrew’s Bastion which was also a coast defence battery.
A coast defence battery was established on Spencer’s Bastion by the British and by 1861 it mounted two 68-pdr SB guns and four 8-inch (shell) guns. The battery is ‘L’ shaped and the emplacements survive in a car park. It would appear that the two 68-pdr guns were North facing with two 8-inch guns between them. The other two 8-inch guns faced two the East. There is a small traverse magazine that survives.
