Scattery Island Battery was built by 1811 when it was not to have eight guns, that is presumably the six 24-pdr SB gun in barbette emplacements and two carronades or lighter guns on the roof of the Defensible Barracks. Scattery Island Battery followed the conventual layout for the coastal defence batteries built on the Lower Shannon in the later Napoleonic Wars. At some point in the 1860s the six 24-pdr SB guns were replaced by the highly successful 64-pdr SB gun that had proves a success during the Crimean War.
The battery itself is in reasonable condition but there appears to have been an management decision made to let the undergrowth grow over the site. It is now heavily covered with brambles with only one gun emplacement cleared.
