Doonaha Battery follows the basic configuration of the coast defence batteries built on the Shannon Estuary in 1814 but smaller than the other batteries and mounted only four 24-pdr guns. The gun platform is only two hundred feet wides, some fifty feet less than the other batteries. The Battery is located on the North shore between Kilcredaun and Scattery Island Batteries.
The Battery is now privately owned. For a period of time, a previous owner, attempted to strip the site of all cut stone, including an attempt to blow up the defensible barracks. The damaged caused by this explosion allows one to get a good impression of how these defensible barracks were built.
