Wong Nai Chung Gap Howitzer Battery was approved in 1898 to mount two 8-inch 70cwt RML guns.  Construction of the Battery was carried out between February and April 1899 with the works costing a total of £191.18.   The objective of the Battery was “to repel any attack being made by a landing part of an armed force at Deep Water Bay”. (TNA Wo 78/5346).

As with the Lei Yue Mun 8-inch Howitzer Battery, built at the same town, this was a prepared concrete position with two recesses for ready ammunition.  The guns were not left on site.  The concept was similar to the seven howitzer batteries built along the Victoria Lines in Malta at the same times.
