Sai Wan Hill Battery was initially proposed in 1894 to mount two 6-inch Mark VII guns. Work commenced by 1900 and was completed by 1904 when the two guns were in place. There was also a Machine Gun for local defence. By 1907 Sai Wan Hill Battery was considered superfluous and by 1911 it had been decommissioned.
Sai Wan Hill Battery was adjacent to an old infantry Redoubt that was built on the top of Sai Wan Hill.
In the run up to World War 2 the site of the battery was remodelled to mount three 3-inch 20 cwt Anti Aircraft Guns. It appears that two 3-inch guns were installed by 1939. In 1949 there were plans for four 3.7-iinch A.A. guns to be installed on the sire, but this was never followed through.
As with Pinewood Battery, the building of the new Anti Aircraft battery largely destroyed the old 6-inch gun emplacements. The underground works however, including magazines, have survived. On site now you are able to see the underground magazines, emplacements for two 3-inch A.A. guns, built over the old 6-inch BL gun emplacements. To the right of the original battery are two additional emplacements for 3.7-inch A.A. guns built after 1945 when the battery was upgraded. To the rear is the original infantry redoubt.
