The War Office Authority to build Central Battery was given on 11th May 1886, although work had started on the site in December 1885. The Battery was completed in June 1891. The Battery mounted a 10-inch Mark I R.C.D. and a 6-inch Mark VII BL gun. The 10-inch gun had a Cartridge store for 200 rounds, with room in the shell corridor for 200 rounds. The 6-inch gun had both a Cartridge and Shell store and was higher up the slope than the 10-inch underground works.
