York Redoubt 6-pdr Q.F. Battery was built between Jun 1890 and February 1892 and cost of total of £1, 321, exactly on budget.  The battery mounted two 6-pdr gun inside rock cut casemates that were all connected by a tunnel.  Just inside the entrance there was a separate chamber, cut into the hillside, that was used as the magazine. The guns were mounted on pedestal mounts with a wooden platform set on concrete slabs for the crew to operate on.  The roof was protected with girders and corrugated iron.  The Battery appears to have been decommissioned in about 1903 when the two 6-pdr guns were moved to new position within York Redoubt itself.  We have named this York Redoubt 12-pdr Upper Battery.  It is assumed that the 6-pdr Lower Battery proved extremely wet and uncomfortable during the winter months.
