Point Pleasant was first settled by the British in about 1749 but the site was found to be too exposed to the elements and the fledgling settlement was moved into an area around Halifax Citadel (Fort George). About 1760 coastal defence batteries were constructed on the shore line of Point Pleasant including the following batteries:

In 1900 a new Submarine Mine Observation Station and Test Room was built on the outside of Fort Ogilvie. This was a replaced for the decommissioned Observation Post at York Redoubt.
