Devil’s Battery or Devil’s Point Battery was located at Hartlen Point covering the Eastern Passage into Halifax Harbour. Planned just before the outbreak of World War 2 this battery was one of two that was to be under the fire control of the Command Post at York Redoubt. Together with the Chebucto Head Battery, Devil’s Battery were to mount 9.2-inch Mark 10 guns. These guns were on high angle fire mounts (Mark VII mounts) allowing a 35 Degree elevation, rather than 15 Degree and this increased the range by 10,000 yards to 30,000 yards in the counter-bombardment role. The the three actual 9.2-inch battels (dated 1900 to 1903) were move from earlier positions, two from Sandwich Point Battery and one from Fort McNab. The three barrels had been sent back to the UK to be re-lined prior to installation.
The three gun emplacements had underground magazines (see the video for images) up to 30 feet underground with underground tunnels connecting the gun positions, engine room and battery command post. Devil’s Battery was built between 1940 and April 1941 and remained operational until 1950.
