Halifax was established as a military base by the British in the 18th Century, and by the 1850s had become the principal military dockyards in North America.  The Royal Navy had a dockyard here with a graving dock and coaling facilities added between 1881 to 1897.  The dockyard was closed in 1905 and was later used by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Halifax Harbour has fortifications dating back to the middle of the 18th Century.  The primary fortifications used by the British between 1840 and 1914 were:

  • Halifax Citadel
  • Point Pleasant Battery
  • North West Arm Battery
  • Fort Olgivie
  • Fort Charlotte
  • York Redoubt
  • Cambridge Battery
  • Fort Ives
  • Fort McNab
  • Sandwich Point Battery, still military
