North Gorge Magazine

North Gorge Magazine is largely a forgotten feature, tucked away in a gully below Buena Vista.  This was an Army Magazine that could hold 4,000 barrels of powder in 1888 and was one of the larger magazines.

The Magazine was originally built with four chambers (marked in black on the plan). The actual magazine is partially underground and is now part of a two-storey building with lift.   This is as a result of building another floor on the old magazine.

Between 1879 and 1881 the magazine was expanded to eight chambers of roughly the same size.

About 1900 the whole establishment was converted to a military cold storage depot and this appears to have continued for three or more decades.  There are remains of a narrow gauge railway track and tunnel running through to Rosia Bay near the Victualling Yard (see image).

In 2019 derelict but is liable to be redeveloped.
