Montague Counterguard provides additional protection to Montague Bastion and Montague Curtain. It overlooks the Old Mole and Harbour, and lined Waterport Casemates to Chatham Counterguard.
Returns for 1859 showing the following guns mounted on Montague Curtain:
- Thirteen 32-pdr guns
- Three 10-inch Howitzers
By 1886 many of the smooth bore 32-pdr guns have been removed and the armament is shown as:
- One 64/32-pdr RML gun on Garrison Standing Carriage
- Two 32-pdr SB guns
- Two 10-inch Howitzer
